Japanese master Yoko Reikano Kimura performs on the Koto and the Shamisen, bringing sophisticated artistry to the beauty of Japanese traditional sound. Her program will feature music of Kin'ichi Nakanoshima, as well as music by American composers Lou Harrison and Marty Regan. Guest artists for this remarkable program will be Hikaru Tamaki, cello, and James Nyoraku Schlefer, shakuhachi.
Colorado String Quartet and Shakuhachi
The Colorado Quartet performs a program with music for string quartet and shakuhachi, plus the glorious Debussy String Quartet. Two works by contemporary composers Carlos Sanchez-Gutierrez, and James Nyoraku Schlefer blend the musical and cultural worlds of Japanese and European classical music. Mr. Schlefer is also the shakuhachi soloist.
Drew Petersen
Award winning eighteen-year-old pianist, Drew Petersen, has performed solo and concerto recitals in both Europe and the United States. He was presented in performances at Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall at the ages of five and six. Among his other performances are recitals at the Musica e Arte Festival in Tolentino, Italy, Verbier Festival in Verbier, Switzerland, Euro Music Festival in Leipzig, Germany, as well as performances in New York City at Steinway Hall, the Rose Theater at Lincoln Center, Symphony Space, Donnell Library and Greenwich House of Music. The program includes works by Beethoven, Messiaen, and Liszt.

Kammerraku is groundbreaking new chamber music for string quartet with Japanese instruments – an evocative, exciting sound blending two timeless musical traditions. Nami Kineie (shamisen), Yumi Kurosawa (koto), James Nyoraku Schlefer (shakuhachi), and the Voxare String Quartet perform music by Daron Hagen, a New York premiere by Paul Moravec, and world premieres by Somei Satoh and James Nyoraku Schlefer.
Kammerraku is a program of Kyo-Shin-An Arts an organization dedicated to the integration of Japanese instruments into Western Classical music.
Fûjin strings 風神弦
The bamboo flute of Japan meets the strings of Europe in this remarkable program of shakuhachi, violin, cello and piano. Renowned musicians Eriko Sato (violin), Laura Metcalf (cello), David Oei (piano) and James Nyoraku Schlefer (shakuhachi) perform music by American composers Marty Regan and James Nyoraku Schlefer, plus the US premiere of "Seasons" by Iranian composer Eslami Mirabadi. Robert Schumann's classic "Piano Trio No. 1" (sans shakuhachi) concludes the concert.
