Tenri Cultural Institute is excited to announce a new exhibition by Hiroyuki Matsui.
The Bizen ceramic ware has its origin in Okayama prefecture Japan, with one thousand years of history.
Bizen is famous for its significant hardness due to high temperature kiln (furnace) firing and its beautiful reddish-brown color resulting from wood-burning kiln firing.
About the artist: At the age of 39, Matsui convinced his family to quit his job for pottery making.
In order to get a spectacular finish of the Old Bizen ceramics, he uses a unique clay making process of using an (ogama) a huge kiln to burn, and using firewood to burn the pot for two weeks without the use of gas or electricity. Currently, he has shifted his focus from creating art objects to creating works that can be used in everyday life.
