Group Exhibition

The Tama Art University Alumni Association New York Club Exhibition has been holding annual exhibitions entitled "Home Away from Home" since 2004. We mark our 22nd edition this year.

Each day, we inhabit places, move through them, and accumulate memories. Yet a place is far more than a geographical location. It is a deeply personal and ever-changing experience, shaped by the interplay of light, sound, scent, relationships with others, and memory.

This year's theme "Sense of Place" brings together artists who have left Japan to live and work in New York, a city where diverse cultures and perspectives intersect. Through their individual experiences and artistic practices, they reexamine the very notion of place. While gaining new perspectives through encounters with different cultures, these artists continue to engage with their own roots and memories, deepening their creative expression. Through their media of choice, they explore how they perceive the world and define their own presence within it.

What is presented here is not a record of any particular location. Rather, the works evoke the shifting atmosphere of the city, the unexpected familiarity experienced while traveling, the ambiguity of what it means to return home, and the elusive sense of belonging that often defies language. Together, they quietly give form to feelings that many of us carry within ourselves yet find difficult to express. Their diverse visual languages may resonate with the viewers' own bodily memories and lived experiences, inviting new ways of sensing and understanding place.

This exhibition poses universal questions: What is a place? Where is home? As viewers stand before these works, the places envisioned by the artists may intersect with their own memories, allowing fundamental questions to emerge quietly: Where am I? and What does place mean to me?

Sense of Place is not an exhibition that asks merely to look at places, but one that invites you to experience them anew. May the place that lies dormant within you quietly come into view.

Within this Exhibition, Keico Watanabe is holding her solo exhibition as the featured artist. Since arriving in New York in 1999, the artist continues to hone her painterly execution of cityscapes. Her boundless optimism can be felt in the energy of her works. The receding streets allow more colors into the elements such as words and instruments as she incorporates the rhythm of jazz that continues to inspire her. Faith and community provide the foundation of her artistic practice.
